SYNTHESIS AND METAL BINDING PROPERTIES OF NOVEL
CITRATE ESTERS.
Aida Ayyad
and Michael L. Merchant. Department of Chemistry and Physics, Texas
Woman's University. We have utilized a one step, acid-catalyzed
reaction to synthesize novel citrate esters. The novel esters are
synthesized using one, two, or three stoichiometric ratios of alcohol
to citric acid, thus yielding mono-, di-, or tri-esters of citric
acid. The alcohols used in these experiments were dodecyl alcohol and
also 2'-derivatives of ethoxyethanol. Calcium binding properties of
the citrate esters were studied using a calcium-ion selective
electrode. Experiments indicate the monododecyl citrate ester binds
calcium with a ratio of two esters per calcium ion. Qualitative
investigation of metal binding properties using barium (2+), copper
(2+), and iron (3+) indicate that the binding is strong and results in
a complex not readily soluble in water or organic solvents (e.g.
hexanes or methylene chloride). Crystals of the Cu2+: citrate ester
complex suitable for structural studies have been grown. X-ray
diffraction studies by collaborators are being initiated. We would
like to thank the Robert A. Welch foundation for support of this
research through a three-year grant to the Department of Chemistry and
Physic of Texas Woman's University.

Selina Hastings, the
Countess of Huntingdon,
curated
by Bridwell Library's long-time friend,
Wanda
Willard Smith, this catalog recounted the life and
correspondence of Lady Huntingdon (1707-1791), who, after John
Wesley, was the most important founding figure of eighteenth-century
Methodist societies. The exhibition also traveled to Drew University
and Duke University.

SicolaMartin, an Austin-based communications firm, recently
completed a significant pro bono project for Heart House Austin.
The firm’s 2002 summer interns produced marketing communications
tools including a new slogan, posters, and press kit design. These
tools will help communicate a clear and consistent message about
Heart House to volunteers, donors and parents of Heart House kids.
We’d like to thank Joseph Papania for selecting Heart House as this
summer’s project. We also thank the interns responsible for the
exceptionally creative work:
Rosa Ayyad, Amy
Boeker, Meredith Callaway, Tom Cook, Angela Cotton, Matt Giese, Beau
Hanson, Michael Holton, Clarice Jenkins, Kara Mattheny Brandon
Morgan, Melanie Tong and Sunny Yochim. (Heart
House is a free afterschool program dedicated to providing a safe
haven and academic support to low-income children and encouraging
them to become good citizens.)
